Hi hi! Welcome back, how are you doing? Hopefully good ☺ The last blog we talked about some of the best dance movies you should watch, but some of the best TV shows incorporate dance, and I wouldn’t be a dance enthusiast if I didn’t share some of my favourites with you. With that being said, here are some of my favourite dance shows you should check out!
1. So You Think You Can Dance. (Streaming on HULU+ LIVE TV)
Okay, so starting off with a classic, most people have heard of So You Think You Can Dance, and it is one of the most iconic dance shows out there. So You Think You Can Dance (SYTYCD) is a reality TV show that follows aspiring dancers through a competition all in hopes to win the title and grand prize. Immensely talented dancers debuted on this show such as Travis Wall, Twitch, Allison Holker, and Alex Wong who now hold amazing careers because of it. While each season hosts talented dancers and iconic performances, I have to be completely honest and say the first couple seasons are the best (please don’t hate me SYTYCD 😅) the talent pool is crazy, the choreography is out there and all around amazing! The show also does an amazing job of showing you how much effort and commitment is made by dancers and choreographers to each performance, nonetheless, you end up falling in love with it.
2. Soundtrack. (Netflix)
This show isn’t well known but in all honesty, it is a really good show if you are an arts lover. The audience follows three main characters Nellie, Joanna, and Samson through their trials and tribunals of following their dreams and the sting of reality. It is a musical drama that holds diversity at the core and introduces you to the “Soundtrack” of each of their lives. Each episode features performances done by the cast to songs by musical legends such as Whitney Houston, Dolly Parton, and Amy Winehouse alongside more contemporary artists like the Weeknd, and Daniel Caesar. What I love about this show is instead of each character just breaking out into song and dance, the characters divide each performance to underscore how they feel making you fall in love with each character even more. Unfortunately the show only has one season but it is so worth watching!
3. Fame TV Series (Amazon)
An oldy but a goody, Fame the TV series debuted in 1982 and lasted 6 seasons following the 1980 motion picture by the same name. The audience followed the stories of the students and faculty of the New York City High School for the Performing Arts. It wouldn’t be a TV show without good old drama and musicals! The show garnered a lot of attention from worldwide audiences and introduced us to some household names like Debbie Allen. This show is a great way to get nostalgic over classic ‘80’s outfits, hairstyles and a look into some iconic dance styles while also cheering for some of your favourite characters!
Fun Fact: The show had so much love that in 2008 a tv series titled “Bring Back...Fame” followed up on the original cast and the overall impact of the show!
4. The Get Down (Netflix)
Now this show is more music based, but dance really does go hand-in-hand with the story. The series follows the rise of disco and hip-hop in New York’s 1970’s South Brox among a group of teenagers who are just trying to figure out who they are and what they want to become. Filled with so much colour and life, the show really captures the art of music and dance. Both critics and audiences applaud the way the show really captures reality and the fantasy of one’s dream. Plus, the show was created by multi-talented Baz Luhrmann and Stephen Adly Guirgis and casts Justice Smith, Shameik Moore, and Jaden Smith. I highly recommend it!!
5. We Speak Dance (Netflix)
If you are looking for a more feel-good show that takes you around the world, We Speak Dance is the one for you. It is a docu-series that follows Vandana Hart, a former United Nations Advisor who travels the world discovering and documenting different communities who use dance to enrich their lives and create a positive space. This docu-series will 100% get you falling in love with dance and show you how much dance surrounds us, it will also get you to start dancing in your living room.
