5 Things You Should Do Before Your Dance Class

You did it, you joined a dance class! Whoop whoop!! You are one step closer to becoming the dancer you want to be. But you’ve never been to a dance class and now you’re getting ready for your class and you have no idea what to do or bring with you. Here are some helpful tips to consider before coming to your dance class

1. Make sure you are registered and good to go.

I know this sounds super simple, but make sure you actually registered for the class. Picture this, you are running late and you trying to gather all of your things in your bag and you have to leave the house in the next 5 minutes but you just remembered you forgot to register for the class. Now you are rushing to register on your phone and you don’t want to be late! To make sure this doesn't happen to you in the future, try registering for the class earlier. Although you can register when you arrive, it would probably be easier for yourself if you registered ahead of time so you don’t have to worry about that when you are getting ready or are on your way to class.

2. Wear comfortable clothes/shoes

When dancing you want to make sure that you are not restricted in any way so you can do the moves and have fun by not wearing jeans, or bulky sweaters. You don't want to feel restricted resulting in you not having doing the moves as best as you can, or having as much fun. The worst thing would be you busting out your favorite dance moves and next thing you know you hear a big rip and look back and your jeans are ripped in half! To avoid this nightmare, be sure to wear something comfy like sweat-pants, leggings, shorts, and a T-Shirt. The same goes for shoes, you want to be able to dance in something breathable, comfortable and ultimately doesn’t hurt your feet. Not only are you dancing but you are working out, so you want to be able to breathe, have fun and not worry about your clothes or shoes!

3. Don’t forget to bring a water bottle.

This may sound like a given, but hydration is key! Dancing is a fun way to get in a workout, therefore dance class is a great way to get in a sweat. While you’re moving you will notice yourself getting more tired and staying hydrated is essential so you can have fun and keep going. Our bodies are made up of 70% water, and when dancing and/or working with your body, you are going to lose some water that your body has and it needs to be replaced. So don’t be afraid to bring as much water as you want or can! Trust me, your body will thank you later!

4. Get there 15 minutes early.

When arriving at your dance class, you don’t want to be so early that you are the only one there and have nothing to do but stare at your beautiful face in the mirror (no judgement, do you!) and you also don’t want to be so late that you missed warm up, so arriving 15 minutes prior to your class is the perfect time! If you want smooth sailing prep time for your classes, arriving 15 minutes early, signing in and getting ready is the perfect. Often times that’s when everyone starts arriving as well, so arrive in between those 15 minutes, get settled and say hi to some familiar faces!

5. Stretch/ start warming up when you arrive.

While waiting for your class to begin, warming up and stretching is a great! Although the majority of classes incorporate warm up and stretch before their class, it never hurts to stretch and warm up on your own. If you are worried about a sore arm or leg, working on stretching that specific area would be a good idea to make sure you are feeling fully up to it later on! (nothing’s worse than wanting to do a move and you are still feeling a little too stiff!) When you arrive, you can warm up with friends, catch each other up on what you have been doing, or even help each other stretch before you get started.
