Whether it’s your first ever dance class or you’ve been dancing for a while, any type of dance can sometimes be challenging, especially on our mental health. It’s totally normal to feel self conscious or out of place from time to time in the studio. However there are so many ways to change your mindset when you’re dancing to keep those negative thoughts at bay.

The dreaded mirrors!!

In almost every dance studio ever there is always a  wall of mirrors to great you first thing when you walk in. The mirrors can be extremely helpful when learning new combinations or for self-corrections, however the other half of the time they’re usually a massive enabler for self-criticism and comparison. Although very hard to ignore, if you feel this is something that bothers you during your class, try focusing on the people around you to ground you back into your surroundings. Or even try looking above your head to a fixed point on the wall.

Dealing with feeling behind

We’ve all been there when we just can’t seem to pick up the choreography or the timing or the movement just feels off. Know that it’s more than ok if you ever feel behind everyone else. Some things you will pick up straight away and other things will take a bit more time. We all learn in different ways and at different speeds. Take a breath and maybe ask the teacher or someone else in your class to go over the choreography with you. And most importantly remind yourself that dance should be fun so don’t stress yourself out if something isn’t quite working the first try.

Being kind to yourself !

Showing yourself compassion is so important during any class. Getting feedback can always be expected but remember from time to time to focus on your small wins. Whether that be achieving a goal you set for yourself last time you had class, remembering the choreo or even just showing up  that week. Showing yourself a bit of grace and kindness can allow yourself to feel more confident about your dancing and how you feel in class.

Remember that every dancer has moments of doubt, but it’s how you approach those moments that truly matters. By focusing on progress rather than perfection, staying present in the joy of movement, and showing yourself kindness, you can turn any class into a positive experience. Most importantly let's remember that dance is meant to uplift and inspire and technique will come after
